CRTD.A/WLP event at the 56th CSW on Rural Women

Thu, 03/01/2012

The Collective for Research and Training on Development -Action and the Women Learning Partnership organised on March 1st a parallel event at the 56th CSW in New York to discuss the complex issue of rural women's work and the impact of a narrow definition of "rural women's work" on subsequent social policies and legal framework that continue to penalize rural women in Lebanon and throughout MENA. Panelists from CRTD.A and from the Association Democratique des Femmes du Maroc elicited discussions with participants on the ways in which conventional statistics fail to capture value and compute all aspects of work undertaken by women in rural areas and feminist strategies to critically review and revise mainstream measurements of work.

During the well attended plenary discussions, participants from around the globe validated the analysis presented and backed it up with local examples whilst supporting CRTD.A's suggestion to critically challenge the ways in which rural women's work is defined and measured.
